We have just been de-briefed don the leeds city arts booklet brief, and unfortunately my proposals were not chosen to continue to design the rest of the booklet. I am not completely disappointed that my designs were not chosen as i feel i have gained alot of experience form it. As it was a tight deadline of design and create the proposals inside a week it gave me experience on quick turn around's, and also booklet/book design. i havn't done alot of this before hand but type and layout has always interested me, so by having challenged this brief i have learnt alot in terms of what is expected, what designs may work and which ones don't, also how to structure my time in terms of a live brief.
Through the de-briefing an explanation to why my designs were not picked were explained. Some of the positive attributes of my designs was the use of simple colour and using the pens and scribbles to create a running theme to the booklet, on the other hand of this, even though the idea was a plus, it was also expressed that i should of gone with pencil crayons as they had more of a child feel and that the pens were too vibrant and sharp, where as if i had used light pencil crayons, these would of faded into the background and not been a main focal point. Again with the pens and scribbles it was raised that i should never use a drop shadow as once looking at them again i could clearly see that they were pixelated and very poor. This is a lesson for me as on-screen they looked light and accurate, but once printed it was a whole different story. I was actually embarrassed to have presented such poor work.
A final point that was made, was that my work was messy, in sense of body text relating to the imagery, which is true, again after seeing my work after it had been proposed i can see they do not compliment each other, and is something i will take time to think about in future designs.
What have i learnt?:
I feel this has been a successful brief in terms of evaluating my mistakes and building on them for the future. i can see that i got too caught up in making it look nice and fancy, and didn't take time to design it effectively for my target audience and to layout the imagery and body copy accordingly. i feel i rushed into it and didn't consider the vitals of simple yet effective layout and also what the brief was exactly asking. From this i will consider problem analysis in more depth to have a further understanding of the brief so that i can design accordingly and not just predominately design for the finished product i desire in my head.
